The owner of the house is Mr. Maguei Morita. The house is a typical residence of the samurai class in Yaeyama, and shows the dignity, elegance, and taste of the samurai class at that time. The house is characterized by a large number of rooms, with the first, second, and third tatami rooms arranged in order from the entrance, and the back tatami rooms spread out behind them. This is a house that children would love to play hide-and-seek in.

Description

Built in 1909 by Sonei Morita’s father Sonsho (former mayor of Yonaguni Village). In 1984, the building was moved from its old location to Ishigaki Yaima Mura and restored the same year. As of 2021, the building is 112 years old. The residence embodies the typical form of agentry residence in Yaeyama. The architecture was designed freely, with numerous rooms, a large tatami-floored room at the back of the house, and a protruding entryway. The floor plan consists of a "Tokonoma" (decorative alcove) of 13.26 square meters, a Buddhist altar room of 13.26 square meters, and a living room of 6.61 square meters, as well as a kitchen of 10.91 square meters, and a storage room of 4.96 square meters running alongside the main building. In addition to the main living rooms, there are three more rooms (11.6, 8.26, and 9.95 square meters) on the back side of the house, while a wooden plank walkway covered by "amahaji"(extending eaves) surrounds the entire building. The pillars and materials used are known in Yaeyama dialect as ”Kyaangi” (Inumaki tree/Buddhist pine) and "Kurukii" (Ryukyu ebony), and the framework is also made with high-grade island materials such as "Iijoo(Iiju)" (mokkoku tree/cleyera), "Fukun" (fukugi tree), and "Shindan(sendan)" (chinaberry). On the building's ridgepole is inscribed the phrase "Tenkan Shifuku Shibiranka", which is meant to ward off evil spirits and protect against fire.
